Q. What is Advent?

A. Advent is a season in the church that begins four Sundays before Christmas. It is a season of preparation and anticipation that begins the church year. In worship, the paraments change to blue. In years when we are able to gather together in person, the Advent wreath is added and at St. Michael decorations for Christmas Eve are added slowly throughout the season. You can learn more about the season of Advent here.

Q. How can we celebrate Advent?

A. Three great ways to celebrate are through worship, at-home devotionals, and an online advent calendar. Advent devotionals have been mailed out in late November. You can also download a devotional from Luther Seminary.

As in previous years, St. Michael’s artists have created an Online Advent Calendar. Visit advent.stmlc.us starting December 1 to see (and hear!) this year’s calendar.

Q. What worship opportunities happen during Advent?

A. The four Sundays of Advent in 2023 are December 3, 10, 17, and 24. Additionally, mid-week Advent services will be held at 6:45 pm on Wednesdays December 6, 13, and 20. Each Advent service will be preceded by a dinner at 6pm. Watch your email or check the calendar for more details on the mid-week services.

Q. When are Christmas services at St. Michael?

A.  The season of Christmas begins on December 25 and lasts for 12 days. During this season, we celebrate the birth of Jesus and the promise that God is with us.

A Christmas Eve Candlelight service with Communion will be held at 7pm on Sunday, December 24, at St. Michael Lutheran. The service will be preceded by a concert at 6:30pm.
